Schulphoek House

Hermanus, Western Cape

Founded in 1999, fully renovated and expanded in 2017.

‘Five-star elegance, tranquil, luxurious, stunning locale.’

Schulphoek House offers understated luxury and Cape refinement to its guests. Set on the protected Schulphoek bay in Sandbaai (Sandy Bay), 4 km from Hermanus centre. The bay is a place of tranquillity; home to cove dwelling marine life and a place of respite for visiting Southern Right whales during their annual calving season. Indulge in the singular beauty of the Cape or read a book from our library in a comfy armchair. A relaxed and refined experience awaits.

15 Spacious and stylish bedrooms; 9 sea-facing & 6 garden.

Each unique room tells a story of local art, hand-crafted furniture and South African heritage.

Rooms and bathrooms are individually decorated with thoughtful decor touches and luxurious amenities. Generously sized superior, luxury, standard and family rooms offer options with patios overlooking the garden, or with sweeping views of the bay.

Seafront lounge and dining room. Upstairs patio with sweeping views of the bay. Schulphoek House takes great pride in its cuisine and wine offering. The dinner menu is limited to fresh and locally sourced ingredients; venison from the nearby Karoo region and fresh fish sourced from local fishermen. Dedicated gardeners produce small crops of baby vegetables and herbs for the kitchen. The wine has been curated from the Hemel-en-Aarde region. Room service. Lunch on request.

Restaurant & bar. Salt pool in courtyard garden. Body therapy.

Efforts at sustainability began in 1999 with water harvesting, solar heating and a saltwater pool and continued in our 2017 build project, which focused solely on sustainable and eco-conscious building practices. These include solar power to run the entire property, a hydronic air conditioning system, a thermal water heating system, as well as increased water harvesting storage – the house is holistically designed to be carbon neutral and bio-dynamic. Awarded a prestigious grant by the Austrian government. Stellenbosch university monitors the results of the house’s energy consumption for further analysis into sustainability in the Cape.
